We show a sample of the upcoming model and animation changes to the turrets in EVE Online.

Firing effects are a placeholder, video is showing the new turret animations only, work in progress.

It would be awesome if you could preview the turret models like you can with ships.
That would be a nice little addition.

Question is: Are you gonna have to deploy them before you fire or are they gonna pop out automatically when you fire.

Haven't played since May '09, and won't again 'til we walk on stations.

But can we shoot individual ship components now, like we used to on Freespace?

@philmarcracken : the "turret-missiles" for the FBs were a hotfix (and as such, not exactly the best solution), they are still working on missile-bays though, they said as much during the presentation this is from. They'll probably wait until they can start using virtual entities, which don't put nearly as much load on the server and give them to keep the missile behaviour more or less the same, but far more flexible.

@ghostbirdofprey the new turret tech is what will allow them to do visible launchers, but they need to revamp a bunch of the missle boats as they have launchers currently built into the model itself (i.e. the drake). So they are focusing on turrets only right now.

@Hurion Actually from what they said at fanfest the new tech behind these turrets is far more efficent then the old one, so it may in fact actually reduce CLIENT side lag

We are getting closer to the graphics level from the cinematics!
This looks amazing! But sadly, as others already said, why still no missile bays? :(

umm ... they look cool, But will it slow down fireing times haveing a second to deploy .... when the abaddon deplyed its turrets it was liek a 5 second delay befor it fired.. or will they deploy when you lock onto a target...

@coolhacky Torfi was saying that launcher hardpoints are planned, soon (TM). Basically they would have to change some things; for example, the drake model has launchers built in, so that would have to be reworked. I think I had caught that part on fraps, I'll see about posting it if CCP doesn't get it up soon.

Turrets that retract into the hull, very sweet. Animations seem a bit sped up at the moment, but it's wip so that might change. Missile launcher models must be on the "to do" list, as they have never existed xD

@epicwarding Lag is mostly caused by delays between the client and the CCP server. If I understand this right, the entire turret animation is handled by the clients.

Looks awesome.. only question will be deployment time.. will those nested turrets deploy while locking the target?, or will you have to wait to shoot until they deploy themselves after you lock the target and hit the fire button?

either way, they look absolutely "tasty" };O)~

Regarding the comments on Missile Launcher graphics, I am very curious how they would distinguish the various launcher types graphically. I mean, how would you make a Rocket Launcher look different from, say, a Cruise Missile Launcher?

Nice stuff, now we'll all spend our time wheeled up to our hulls watching @ shiny effects...

But where the HELL are launcher bays? And anime style missile trajectory (maybe not a good idea for flight time though...) !!!

@Utipod Probably semi-fresh reskins, they have to rebuild the asset format anyway to allow for the custom paintjobs and corp logo stickers for your ship.

@phxbadash I didn't even realize they were introdicing new code. I thought this was just a remodel like they did with the scorpion. if they are doing something that would let them do missiles then that's awesome.

Which ship models need changed though? I can't think of any ships besides the drake and a couple of tech 2 ships with obvious missile launchers sculpted in.

you mean the sound effects that everyone turns off? I'd much rather have some new art assets such as this, and though I agree that the time could be spent a bit better elsewhere I find this to be an interesting change for the best.

Now if only we could have our cyno effect back....

@williamkendrick Incarna in the form of Captains quarters will come to Sisi in a few weeks, and TQ this summer. In stations this year, they seemed fairly firm on that last one.
