So I showed my boyfriend this video and got his opinion. He's been an electrician for approximately 40 years. Here's what he had to say "The problem with noncommercial neon signs, is that they do not contain the high voltage wires and the transformer within a steel housing. The voltage can be upwards to 15 thousand volts and any malfunction will cause arcing and most likely fire. Again glad you're okay! The transformer was hanging by the wires which either caused it to slightly unplug from the sign or the insulation to break down which started the arcing and the popping. I'm glad it was against the sheet rock wall as they have a 30 minute burn rating. Most commercial neon signs will never start a fire. If you would like to light up your sign again, I'd be happy to advise you how to do that SAFELY! Again, glad you're all safe!"
