This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the all-new 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Versus the all-new 2024 Lexus TX 3-row, large SUV.
The TX and the Grand Highlander are based on the same platform and offer great space in the 3-row SUV category. The burning question is, is the TX worth the premium over the Grand Highlander? Let’s get into it….
The TX and Grand Highlander offer three powertrain options. Both share the same gas and Hybrid Max powertrain but one is tuned for premium fuel and the other for regular fuel.
The gas models have a 2.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The TX has 275 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque, that’s an extra 10 horsepower and 7 lb-ft of torque more than the Grand Highlander.
The TX 500h and the Grand Highlander Hybrid Max have a 2.4L turbocharged hybrid powertrain with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The TX has 366 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque, Thant’s an extra 4 horsepower and 6 lb-ft of torque more than the Grand Highlander.
Where they differ is in the next powertrain. The Grand Highlander has another hybrid available with less power but excellent fuel economy. A 2.5L 4-cylinder hybrid matched to an ECVT, a combined 243 horsepower.
The TX gets a PHEV, it’s a 3.5L V6 plug-in hybrid powertrain, it’s matched to a CVT and has a combined 404 horsepower. It has an EV range of 53 km/33 miles.
We feel the best comparison is between the Grand Highlander Hybrid Max and the TX 350 or the TX F Sport 500h. We’ll be breaking down those models in our comparison.
The Grand Highlander Hybrid Max interior competes well with the TX. The Grand Highlander gas and 2.5L Hybrid models offer more of a Toyota grade interior and the price reflects that.
There are some interior differences between the Grand Highlander Hybrid Max and the TX. First off, the Grand Highlander is a 7-8 passenger vehicle, the TX 6-7 passengers. The TX Hybrid Max F Sport models only allow for 6-passengers, the Grand Highlander Hybrid Max 7 because the third row in the Grand Highlander has three seats, the TX only two.
The screen sizes are different as well, the Grand Highlander Hybrid Max has dual 12.3” screens and the TX has a 14” touchscreen, a standard 7” driver display, available 12.3”.
Both have wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto as standard features and they come with many of the same available features. There are some exceptions where the TX has more like the Lexus has a power folding third row, the Grand Highlander Hybrid Max is manual. The Toyota Hybrid Max has an 11-speaker JBL Sound system, the TX an available 21-speaker Mark Levinson system, a standard 12-speaker audio system. Both
The TX and Grand Highlander Hybrid Max have a 10-way power driver’s seat, the TX gets a 10-way power passenger seat, the Grand Highlander 8-way. The TX also has 4-way driver seat lumbar support. Advanced Park is also a feature the TX gets, the Hybrid Max Grand Highlander does not.

Great review. I've been going back and forth on these two. Now I'm more undecided than ever.

Amazing comparison! You always do such a great job analyzing what the manufacturer is trying to sell us, but you have no axe to grind. Lexus did pretty much do a badge job on the GH, but they did it well. I was skeptical when I first saw the TX, but you've really looked at the TX from all angles.

I love you guys - I have been looking for a top trim 3-row (unibody) SUV with a 2nd row bench seat since 2018! And with the exception of a small handful of brands with poor reliability (I'm talking about you, Ford Explorer/Lincoln Aviator, Nissan Pathfinder/Infinity QX-??, & VW Atlas) I'm still searching. And now with these new "Plus Size" models, I'm still left out in the cold by Toyota/Lexus and the Korean twins (I'm not sure about the 2024 Traverse whether I can get my 2nd row bench or not, though I'm also not wild about Chevy reliability.) I think these companies need a new marketing team who listens to the likes of you and me 🙂

Grand Highlander with Hybrid Max already good enough for me. The only thing TX exceeds is that PHEV.

My daughter purchased the grand highlander Hybrid and the size is great for their 3 kids as they have the 8 passenger. If you have the funds to buy the Lexus and have 3 kids you wont be happy with no choice to get 8 passengers or even 7 passengers in the top model. Not many people haul around 6 adults, its all about the kids and room for their friends and the pets. I agree with your comments on seating in the Lexus. Great reviews as we used them for her purchase.

I really do wish they made it an 8 passenger. I hope they come out with it. That is a selling point for me personally.

I was about to place a deposit for the TX 500H in Port Moody Lexus but I end up not doing as they will offer only captain’s chair for the middle row. Until then, will need to look into other brands.

Head scratcher for me, is the F Sport branding and what it offers.
- 2pc rotors, 6 pot calipers (nice!)
- Adaptive suspension, cool!
- rear wheel steering, ok! Sounds like this is going to be a performance oriented vehicle! Until:
- No exposed exhaust
- Black rims, roof rails, calipers, but not badges
- basically same motor from GH?!
Then why the “performance” setup for, no performance difference?

The PHEV has the bulletproof 3.5L engine. Wish that would have been available in the GH. But I bought the GH hybrid, which is fantastic. Have yet to wish it had more hp. Getting 34-40 mpg in everyday driving.

Th GH rear seat is only good for 3 kids if they are not in child seats. Therefore I think I would actually prefer two seats in the back but I'm definitely not willing to pay the extra for it

I agree with you Zack on seats. Give 7 and 8 seats on all trims. Let me choose.
