Scientists have discovered a gigantic structure UNDER the Alps! Did you know that these majestic mountains, like icebergs, have a huge "root" that reaches deep into the Earth's mantle? Researchers from the Ruhr University Bochum and European colleagues have installed a huge network of seismometers to measure earthquake waves and create a detailed picture of the structure beneath the Alps. They are using the fact that earthquake waves propagate at different speeds in different types of rock. This gradually creates a kind of virtual grid of the Earth beneath the Alps that reaches hundreds of kilometers deep. This knowledge could not only help us better understand the geological development of the Alps, but also provide insights into the dynamics of the continental plates of Europe and Africa.
