How is uterus bicornis (heart-shaped womb with two endometrial cavities) diagnosed with ultrasound?

In bicornuate uterus the womb is in a shape of a heart rather than round and it is a congenital condition meaning that women have it when they are born.

Normally the womb is a hollow cavity and is made to expand to accommodate a growing baby during pregnancy. In bicornuate uterus, the top of the womb is separated by a piece of tissue. Depending on the severity of separation, this condition can cause problems during pregnancy because the womb may not be able to expand enough.

During pregnancy women with a bicornuate uterus may have an increased risk of miscarriage and preterm labor. Most women however won’t be aware they have this condition because they usually don’t have any symptoms.
