Welcome to "The Change Makers" – a weekly video series.

In this series our Change Makers share their stories, their thoughts, their ambitions and their actions to leave the earth a better place – to be a Good Ancestor to future generations.

Our planet is experiencing catastrophic environmental harm and it requires us to Think Long Term, beyond our lifetimes, to evaluate our choices and to take actions to ensure a sustainable and healthy future for all.

The stories of those leading the change – The Change Makers – those thinking and acting with long-term vision, are inspirational.
Inspired, we can ask ourselves, “what can we do to become Better Ancestors?”

This week Better Ancestors visits xtreme ZERO WASTE in the town of Raglan, Aotearoa / New Zealand. xtreme ZERO WASTE was begun by Liz Stanway and Rick Thorpe. It has evolved to be a community envisioned, created, and operated waste diversion program now achieving a waste diversion rate of 80% - that is 80% of the community’s waste is now reduced, repurposed or recycled – diverted from traditional landfill.

Landfills are the source of catastrophic waste and pollution across our planet. Although many are managed and sometimes lined, to help contain the toxic chemicals, safety linings are not fully effective and all will, in time, fail.

Aotearoa / New Zealand’s landfills are filling at an alarming rate. However, the work of people like the community operating xtreme ZERO WASTE offers a real solution.
While helping to protect the environment, community waste management systems are also providing jobs and resources back to the people.

Inspired we can all make a difference. To learn more visit:

Episode 12 premieres next week, Sunday 28th March 2021.

I am not sure whether managing waste would be a common pool resource, but if we consider it to be then at 5:20, Elinor Ostrom would be very happy to see this from heaven
