Starting up a diesal lawnmower with a turbo on it.

A few shots of ether while cranking it is perfectly fine. The playing around shooting it up after the engine was already running was quite stupid and reckless.

Starting fluid is only for extreme emergencies when risking damage to the engine may be an acceptable loss.

A word of advice don’t use starting fluid especially after the engine started. You can make that engine fire at the wrong time and shorten the life of the engine dramatically. Get glow plugs or wait for them to warm up but never use starting fluid

Ether is ok if evaporated before ignition but I prefer gasoline dabbed on a shop rag over the intake because of gasoline's lower combustion temp that will be gentler on the cold engine

I had a 1965 wheel horse automatic had it built up pretty good but not as much as you. But you got a nice little tractor.

Nice and you get all that carcinogenic diesel in your face while you mow the lawn, very smart. Fluid while engine is on will ruin the engine too, double smart.
