How to get pure black background in studio portrait

Thank you so much! I just started doing portrait photography and couldn't figure out why my black background wasn't really coming out black. By moving the subject further away from the background and moving the lighting, the background is now pure black and my photos look amazing! I really appreciate the suggestions!
