It usually worked like this...

Your kid accidentally broke your neighbours fence?
Well you could either pay the damages OR sell your son as a temporary slave and he'll work for the neigbour to repair all damages he made. Once it was all done he went back to his family.
(Ofc fence is a minor thing and so it wouldn't cost much... but yea)

I was taught in roman law (I am a lawyer) that selling your son 3 times was standard practice, just symbolic and part of the solemnity needed to emancipate your son from your domus, so he could become a patter familiae by its own.
And it wasn't sold into slavery because have been an slave was a serious steam in your reputation.

In my Ecclesiastical Latin class we had similar funerals whenever one of the expo markers died. Highschool was such a weird time

Well damn, I'm glad I didn't live in ancient Rome. All those times my stepfather threatened to sell us to the circus or gypsies for being bad.

Imagine being one of those lucky people that got hit by lightning and got away unscathed, people who witnessed it would freak out

Must have been wild when somebody got struck by lightning in the middle of the city and you had to just leave him there to decompose because that's where Jupiter wanted him.

Damn imagine crying so much at a funeral they’re like “aight no more crying from anyone. Better put those fussy infants on vibrate.”

In Rome. Fathers don't go to grocery store to pay and get the milk.
He pays the grocery store his son to get the milk🥛 😂🗿

Saul Goodman: *Your Honour, my client only sold his children into slavery twice. He's still by legal definition a loving and caring father*

I still can’t believe HBO wanted me to believe that the Octavian in season 2 was the same guy as the one in season 1.
