Chisholm sets up the problem by discussing the classic case of the ship of Theseus, where parts are removed and replaced over time, and we have problems related to which ship is the original ship. He discusses "loose identity" and "strict identity," the latter adhering to the principle of the Indiscernibility of Identicals. I consider Chisholm's view of mereological essentialism and his argument for this position. We close by setting up some puzzles for persons, which is more fully addressed in another video.
