I had to learn how to play metal guitar by myself over 40 years ago. No youtube back then :). Because of- that, for the entire first year I was doing the palm mutes with my left hand and not with the picking hand. That sounded terrible, and I had to always slide my hand to the first fret when muting the strings trying to avoid the harmonics that would come out on upper frets. Until I started noticing that differently from what I heard on the albums, all my mutes were either in E or A or D.... the open string notes. :)
