A Realistic Way to (sort of) Dual Wield Spears

The previous video about dual spear wielding in a scene from the Wheel of Time TV series:

As silly as the idea is, there is a practical historical way to KIND OF do it. And ironically the source material describes just that. Apparently Aiel warriors make a lot more sense than the show gives them credit for.

So if you haven't you might want to watch that one first. You do whatever you want, but don't blame me if you get confused because you're missing the context. ;)

But the ultimate technique would be to attach two spears together with a chain to create spearchucks. And with one in each hand you are quad-wielding spears!

As another commenter added, the spears in the WoT book series are invariably described as "short" with a flash-back moment showing the origin of the weapon as a cut-down full length spear.

This is basicaly shield with a spike + a spear, perfectly viable.

Only one other thing that should be mentioned is in the novels the Aiel use SHORT spears like the Zulu iklwa. This would make it much easier to use one handed vs a long 'European' spear.

Thats how Cleanrot Knights in elden ring fight.

The cleanrott knights use this, and even brace the spears in a cross when guarding

that sort of resembles how the south African Zulu tribes fought.

@skallagrim so in the books there is an excerpt that’s says:

Morin was having problems with the spear, the haft tangling in her long skirts. “You do not have to go, ” Jeordam told her. “No woman ever has before. We will bring your daughter to you.” “I mean to bring Kirin out of there myself, ” she said fiercely. “You will not stop me.” A stubborn woman. “In that case, you must dress like this.” He gestured to his own gray-brown coat and breeches. “You cannot walk cross-country in the night in a dress.” He took the spear away from her before she could react. “The spear is not easily learned.” The two men who had come with her, awkwardly receiving instruction and nearly falling over their own feet, were proof of that. He found a hatchet and chopped a pace from the spear shaft, leaving four feet, counting nearly a foot of steel point. “Stab with it. No more than that. Just stab. The haft is used for blocking, too, but I will find you something to use as a shield in your other hand.”

>>>4 feet long. 3 foot shaft, 1 foot head. The ones on her back are too long.

Can you show how this was most effective?

The aiel as a whole fights pretty much as a combination between Zulu and almughavars. a powerfull unit but Jordan demonstrates more than once that they a massacred by focused arrow-volleys and that when actually tied up or on an open field heavy cavallry wreaks them. I do love te muance in wheel of time that everyone hypes eachother up but when the fighting comes reality catches up.

i always figured a Spear had to be a certain length, with these sizes they look more like Javelins to me (more throwable and 1 hand wieldable).

Zulu shields consist of long staff with cowhide attached to it.
Some varieties had smaller protective area, being closer that of buckler, but the staff was often the same length as with bigger shields.
So tehnically, you can add spearhead to that staff making it a more comfortable weapon (as you grip onto the same handle for the spear and the buckler as they are a single piece) though using throwing spears in buckler hand becomes less viable.

That's the way many Nilothic people fight in modern day South Sudan and ethiopia. Often the shield is a tortoise shell, and often the spear attached to it has a head on each sides.

With that shieldspear thing you probably won’t want a spear with a crossguard on it for your main hand. Don’t want to hook your other spear in mid combat.

i think i’ve seen some african warriors using the bucker and shield combo as a easier way to block hits from swords and the like, using the spear and somewhat of a extension to the shield. i’ll try to find the wikipedia article if i can, but this looks pretty similar to it

I'm glad you were around to show the cleanrot knights a few tips!

I told you skall. Also the Dual Rapier stance you got taught with one hand up works (with short spears only)
The problem is that it will feel more top heavy so it will demand more muscle control. Since the development of the Thrusting Sword, Short Spears have become basically poor man's Rapiers.

This is basically seen in Zulu fighting. Except the offhand shield often has a long stick instead of a spear.
