A tip I have is to sand your wood heads down a bit to make sure they're flat, and slick, any abnormality in shape could affect testing times

Okay. Since you're going crazy with this "wood head" experiment, why not take it a little further? Take a block of hard wood, and attach a fire resistant fabric between it and a thin piece of hardened steel plate. In doing this, you discover whether the wood can handle the compression onslaught/heat when protected by the thin layer of metal/heat resistant fabric. We know wood alone will burn. But what if....? LOL!

I heard that the wood you tested has the same fire rating as concrete. So I think a cylinder head made out of concrete would be interesting (perhaps finishing concrete given it has a finer grain structure and should theoretically seal better.

I really love seeing this stuff. In the mid 90s I worked at a landscaping company and I was able to get some small 4 stroke to go to out to the job and work, but only because I made a cylinder head gasket out of a cracker box (not the original problem, but the problem keeping it from going on site and doing it's thing). I'd seen my brother do it when we were kids (he was maybe 14, me 12?). The following year, the piece went to the small engine shop who officially serviced our equipment (it was still running, only got seasonal use)- and they were pissed. They told the owner of the company that I shouldn't ever be allowed to work on a piece of equipment again. Thankfully my boss was shrewd, and let me fix anything I thought I could quickly. All sorts of stuff will work, for a limited time. Thanks for reminding me of a fond memory.
