Imagine if you didn't have to choose between 60fps and 24fps? I built a camera rig that can shoot both, and brought it with me for a documentary shoot.

Simon: Sponsored by Samsung

Also Simon: Let's use an iPhone 15 Pro as our second camera

The fact that the iPhone footage holds up so well directly next to the Blackmagic is truly mind boggling. Not enough people are mentioning it tbh.

Very cool possibilities for run and gun docu or wedding shooters! Might need a little more refinement, but this is definitely a unique rig, and I'd bet there's a market for it.

7:29 that cut between the 2 relatively similar shots is such a classic edit. I know it was purely you toggling the layers for a demonstration, but it was a really nice cut. And since its all 1 take from 1 operator, its flawless and more natural for the subject. I think that alone could make this rig worth it for certain situations.

They do this for 3D with the massive imax cameras. Can’t get the big cams close enough together, so they have 1 shooting down at a 1-way mirror, slightly offset.

Funny, I recently build a similar rig for VFX. One camera can use shallow DOF and the other can use deep DOF. the shallow one looks pretty and with the deep one you can actually get a decent camera track.

I've been waiting to make a STEREOTEC rig like this for years when I watch the Arri mini vs. LF field test. This gave some so more ideas for sure. THank you!

Definitely more practical to shoot in higher resolution and crop in in post.
Even when you want slow motion, it’s easier to shoot in HFR and apply motion blur in post.

With this setup, you can’t switch your focal length on the main camera, without rearranging everything.

And for run and gun setups, you should definitely use a zoom lens.

Fantastic idea ! This is why you are not just a Youtuber but a true maker

This is the first legitimate use case I’ve seen for iPhone footage. Brilliant. So many possibilities

I like how you incorporated the sponsored section smoothly that it's not jarring like sponsored sections do.

You've kinda created a very a dollar store version of the day-for-night infrared rig that Hoyte Van Hotyma used on Nope lol

Something that would help with the reflections is putting some cinefoil around the top of the teleprompter and phone lens like a hood. You'll still have to worry about glare and internal reflections on the glass, but the actual reflection of the phone won't be nearly as noticeable. And since cinefoil is basically just fancy tinfoil, it's really easy to maneuver where you need it.

The Apple log format in pro res really made me look at the iPhone as a greater contender

That's exactly how 3D camera rigs work, literally one camera pointing to a mirror but with a slightly different angle

I was genuinely smiling throughout the video, because it was such a fun to watch you tinker and come up with ideas and the way you speak and tell the process, is soooo soothing! :D

Thank you for this video! <3

This is actually pretty useful for 3d camera tracking. Use a high frame rate phone camera to get accurately capture tracking points for vfx.

I think they used a similar setup when shooting some of the fighting scenes in Sparta. They had one zoomed in shot and one wider which they could transition between smoothly.
