Hex because it's a compact way to represent binary numbers using one character per every 4 bits.
Octal because it's also a compact way to represent binary numbers using one character per every 3 bits (and used in the chmod command).
Base 36 because once you wrap your head around hex, it's natural to think of 10 digits combined with 26 letters.
