I'm another Michigander who voted for Slotkin. After getting my degree in 1975, I became aware that the VA Hospital in Saginaw, Michigan, would be in jeopardy of closing if it was unable to pass its accreditation review in one year. I had the skills for the new changes, but the VA was only capable of paying me half or a quarter of what I would have made at a regular hospital. I signed on with the stipulation that it would only be for one year. The hospital was 75 miles from my home. I made sure my family had a home cooked meal each night. I did spin out on the black ice at Hartland twice. I have had family in the military and in missionaries, so I always considered my low professional reimbursement from the VA to be an extension of service to my country. Initially, in 1975, it was quite difficult for vets to get started with service through the VA. It slowly evolved into a better health system with a wonderful volunteer base. The under budgeting of these hospitals annually has national embarrassment. All the chainsaw approach of someone like Musk accomplishes is to muddy the waters.
