Why Everybody Hates Tori, and How To Fix Her.

Tori has become somewhat controversial over the past decade. Today we explore why her character in Victorious did not turn out perfect, and make a quick attempt at understanding how she could have been better.

In the years of vicTORIous, Tori wasn't hated, they started hating her a few years ago, when all the edited videos of Ariana's fans came out criticizing the character and the actress, making it a trend to hate her, and of course, this generation follows the trends 🤷🏻‍♂️
PD: I always liked Tori, she is the most real character in that series

Honestly, I never hated Tori. I always found her to be an enjoyable character.... I guess some people didnt.

Honestly Tori is good as a character. She always helps her friends and is definitely talented. But I don’t like how everyone in the show pretends like she’s more talented than Cat or Jade. And I’m not trying to downplay Victoria Justice’s singing, but the show demonstrated many times that Cat and Jade are way better singers than Tori is.

Y’all tori was the main character so she got to perform at the platinum music awards, but when you look at the auditions jade and cat’s was way more impressive.

That's such a good point that she wasn't written as the centre of the other characters world's (like Carly), so it always felt like she was having to insert herself in the story (which isn't likeable) rather than being in it. Seems like a big writing mistake.
Maybe if they had written it so that the other friends didn't know each other yet and Tori is the reason they all come together or something like that. Rather than a preexisting group of friends that she just joins.

She isn’t a horrible irredeemable character but she isn’t perfect either imo. She’s definitely an interesting protagonist and she does things that make her stand out.

A lot of the criticisms against her are valid but like she isn’t a bad protagonist. Personally I found her more entertaining than Carly and Zoey

I really liked the points you made in this video. I always wondered why I never got that feeling with tori as I would’ve with the main character if it was another tv show or movie. Most of the time it’s obvious that people will like the main character. With tori however it feels like she can never be my favourite even tho she’s not all that bad. I think that we never get to relate with her to THAT point since as you mentioned she’s pretty bland. She seems almost TOO perfect in everything she does which makes it hard to relate to her or to feel connected with her. I also liked the fact that you mentioned other characters’ impact on the main character. It sucks that the whole group seems way too close to each other like if tori wasn’t there the group would’ve still be completed or whole. Tori being there or not being there doesn’t change much. It feels like tori is still an outcast as she was during the first episode like she was just put into this friend group (that already existed before her) and now she’s this additional friend that cannot be AS close to the other characters as they are to each other. And I feel like that continues throughout the seasons because the bond between other characters does not really compare to the bond with them and tori. Overall tho I really liked your perspective and observation on this!

I like that Tori has character flaws (unlike other main female characters like Zoey) but I don’t like that they never address it. I’d argue in the Platinum Music Award episode Jade has great character growth because she decides to give Tori her spot back even though they’ve been at each other’s neck the whole time... I notice that a lot of people say that Jade, Cat, or Andre should’ve been the main character but that’s just not how Dan’s shows work. He makes shows based on an actor or actress he’s previously worked with and sees potential(Kenan & Kel, Amanda Byrnes, Drake and Josh, Miranda Cosgrove, Victoria Justice, and later Jeanette and Ariana.)…. Also Robbie is my favorite character

I hav mixed feelings about tori, I liked her in the beginning, but as the show went on, I think I just forgot she was even in the show and was focused more on the side characters. I did get annoyed when she kisses cats boyfriend, if anything I think cat deserved better than daniel. But she's not that bad, I think sometimes she can be annoying and not really a character we can all relate too. I feel like tori kissing Beck in front of jade was just to get back at her, regardless that it probably wasn't the greatest way to handle it yeah she kinda had it coming. I don't necessarily hate tori, I just think they could have written her better, given her a better story arc. She wasn't all that interesting to me, I really had a crush on Beck when I was younger lol

I think a tricky part of these shows is that they are looking for a laugh every few seconds and often go for mean/bizarre jokes as low hanging fruit, which means the characters do/say mean/bizarre things and makes them unlikeable. You have to write it really well to keep the characters grounded and likeable amongst this. And often they dont find that balance. And this is especially noticeable the more bland a character is, like Tori

The simple truth was that Tori just wasn't funny (except when she had the zombie face glued to her own face). Jade, Cat, Andre, and Robbie/Rex were way funnier. Even though she was the main character, she was among the weakest, comedy-wise. She was great in the first episode where she resisted understudying Trina, and did the number well. As you pointed out, people like Elizabeth Gillies and Ariana Grande rose to the top like cream in a milk bottle.

I agree with what you said, remove tori from the show and it will still be the same show. Also her lip sync skills where not good, so as a viewer it takes away from the fantasy. The other kids fit better in their respected roles much easier then Tori, it felt force with her. Also her acting skills where not good, sometimes going to big in acting isn’t good, just feels force. I would also have to say, having so many characters in one show, with big personalities didn’t do them any favors. We all wanna see character development and she didn’t really have one. A show about a girl that can sing and act, but chose an actress that couldn’t sing or act made it hard to follow the show about singing and acting. lol

Tori is a fine main character, the actual worst Nickelodeon main character is Zoey Brooks. Tori was kinda mean and was always complaining about something in season 1, seems like they were writing her similar to Zoey Brooks in Zoey 101. However, I think they realized how mean she came off, so they rewrote her in season 2 and she became overly-nice and selfless. Zoey 101 just brainwashed us to think Zoey was actually likable. She acts like some big hot shot feminist when actually she’s just a childish bully who likes to use people, and her friendgroup were a bunch of followers who treated her like some god. People need to rewatch the show, specifically the episodes Robot Wars, The Election, and Zoey’s Tutor…she’s not nice. Like in Robot Wars, Logan makes fun of Quinn, her “friends” laugh. They try to blame Logan when caught, Zoey hits him with a pillow (double standard). And gives a situational apology. Zoey and her friends ignore and secretly bully Quinn, except when they need her brain…they’re fake

Here's my two cents on the whole Tori Vega hate train. Honestly the only reason to hate Tori is because she has the same problem almost every single female lead in Dan's show had, in that she was a Mary-Sue. She was always treated as if she were more talented than everyone else, despite being no more talented than the rest. In fact she was often worst than Jade and Cat, who got sidelined in terms of their singing. But as a character? She has her Jerkass Moments, but is she really that much above everyone else when tbh every single character on the show with the exception of Cat are Jerkasses. Some of which have done just as bad as Tori. It's just they are more interesting, and out of all of the main characters Tori has the MOST episodes that go out of their way to put her through the wringer, this is more evident in the last two seasons. Not to mention the amount of times all of her friends were Jerkasses toward her, like the Game show episode! If anything, I'm surprised Zoey Brooks from Zoey101 doesn't get hated as much as Tori, when Zoey is not only the biggest Mary-Sue in all of Nick as a whole, but the worst of Dan's female leads by far. She's so much worse than Tori in every way.
