I’m right there with you, I almost always prefer UK covers but out of these I definitely enjoyed all the US ones better. Since I live in the US, I’m super happy to see the US cover designs getting better. Now we just need the B&N exclusives to get on the Waterstones exclusives’ level! 😅

At the start of the video when you put the US covers and UK covers on either side with the FIGHT across the screen, it made me laugh audibly 😂

I'm usually team UK. The US puts too many people or body parts on the covers when not needed, especially in romance.

My votes:

What Feasts at Night: US (creepy and unique)
The Tainted Cup: UK (love the fungi!)
Warm Hands of Ghosts: UK (I just really do not like the US cover, so the UK cover automatically wins)
Dark Star Burning, Ash Falls White (they’re both beautiful, I cannot choose, special edition wins for sure)
Emily Wilde UK (I love the flowers and fungi everywhere, nature is so pretty)

For me:
1. What Feasts At Night - US but only just, I think the horse just stood out to me more because of the point you were making about skulls being very common on book covers but I do really like the look of the UK cover
2. The Tainted Cup - UK, I wish the US one didn't have the plants on the left side because (and maybe it would look better in person) I don't think the art style really matches the rest of the cover, which is a shame because I do really like the rest of that cover. Also the UK one kind of gives Nausicaa Valley of the Wind Vibes and I love that film
3. The Warm Hands of Ghosts - UK, I agree that neither of these are particularly amazing but I absolutely despise the US one, it looks like a series of biographies I was made to read for school, or like a really bad romance you might pick up at the airport. At least the UK one is nice enough to look at even if it isn't particularly unique or specific to the book itself
4. Dark Star Burning, Ash Falls White - US, the UK one just has too much going on (which is weird because usually that's the criticism I have of US covers). The UK one does give off a younger vibe, so it might fit the book better but I haven't read it so can't comment on that
5. Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands - UK, I think it fits with the first book in the series better, the US one just has too much of a change in font/way the title is written for the first book for me to be happy owning them as a series if that makes sense? Also the UK one matches the tone of the book a bit more in my opinion, the US covers of both the books make me think more of a murder mystery than a cosy fantasy

So overall for me the UK wins with 3:2

I absolutely love the US design of the Emily Wilde series. So looking forward to the third book!

I went three UK and two US. Books 1, 4 and 5 were my favorite covers from the UK.

I think whoever made the UK cover of Dark Star Burning didn’t even read/know about the book and what the Demon Gods actually are. There’s a fox, horse, and falcon/hawk(?) none of which are in the duology. I can’t imagine reading that version and being surprised and confused when those three animals aren’t included or even mentioned, aside from people riding horses in a few scenes, like what were they thinking lol

Love these cover comparisons! I think I like all the American ones as well…except for the Emily Wilde books. Those cheerful UK covers just got me 😍 even though they don’t necessarily suit the story as well.

It would have to be UK for me. And I can understand your rationale about why some of the US covers fit the story better than the UK ones, but for me the cover is something i need to be attracted on an aesthetic level so that i actually reach out for the book😅, like for example the Tainted Cup, the US cover does not feel like a book I would want to read but I love mushrooms, so i got the UK version and I loved it. Something similar with the warm hands of ghosts or what feasts at night. But I have to say this time the US covers are objectively much better than in some of the other comparison videos.

I could look at book covers ALL DAY! ❤ this series

I like both, just depends on the book. I love trying to find the edition I like best before buying a book. Sometimes it’s US, sometimes UK. Sometimes it’s an older edition published ages ago!

I agree I think I prefer the US covers for all of them this time! Although the UK. version of The Tainted Cup is great too, I'm happy with the US version and the printing on the hardback is a huge plus. For Emily Wilde, I like both but I agree that the US version is more academic. I love that series though and am collecting both the US and the B&N editions (that have the UK cover in different colorways), so I get the best of both worlds lol. The only other book in this list that I am interested in is Warm Hands of Ghosts. If I end up liking it, I think I'd prefer the US cover on paperback.

My opinions
What Feasts at Night: US
The Tainted Cup: UK I think? I like both though
Warm Hands of Gosts: US
Dark Star Burning: UK
Emily Wilde: UK by a lot
So pretty even!

I bought the UK of The Warm Hands of Ghosts because I knew it was going to be a darker book and I thought the US cover had more of a romance look to it. I actually got the Waterstone's edition, mainly because the end pages were stunning. That's the only one where I prefer the UK edition. I have found with T. Kingfisher's books, I usually prefer the US over the UK. Not certain why that is really. The Amélie Wen Zhao books are very difficult for me to choose, but I think the US barely edges ahead. Now as far as the Emily Wilde books, I definitely prefer the US as I don't think the UK cover matches the tone at all. They're a little too sweet and the US ones showcase a bit of the creepiness that's there, especially the first book with the branches that look like hands.

My opinion:

What Feasts At Night - U.K. but not by much.
The Tainted Cup - U.K.
The Warm Hands of Ghosts - U.S. but I like both
Dark Star Burning, Ash Falls White - U.S. but they're both beautiful
Map of the Otherlands - U.S.

So I agree with you on several. :)

Aside from covers, why don’t you compare also about the floppiness and paper quality? For me, who plans on collecting books for a long time, paper quality is important and I found that on UK versions.
