I grew up playing baseball in Southern Illinois (about 80 miles from STL). My parents, very poor, got their first TV to watch baseball. I had only one ambition for a long time: play for the Cards! Alas, I was not good enough, but my love for the Cards has never diminished. I recall coming home from Japan, and my brother-on-law would tell me about Whitey Ball. He had been a baseball player and was a high school coach. I played as long as I could, but not having the talent to get even close to playing in the Bigs, I was coming home to finish college. He just kept telling me about Whitey Ball. In Japan I had no access to American baseball and I heard little about the Cards after the blown series against the Tigers. Then the lost years of the 1970s and fearing we would return to an era like that between 1946 and e1964…no post-season in 47 through 63! As 1980 neared, things looked bleak. then Whitey came along, built a team tailored made for Bush 2, the spacious park was made for speed demons and defense. Whitey ball was born, and the legends began. Whitey, Tony, and legends! Yes, last year was disappointing; yet, we are spoiled; yes we need a Whitey or a tony! THANKS TO THE ORIGINAL, to WHITEY, we cannot be happy with mediocre play. May his spirit inspire this team, the now-generation of baby birds, to defend, run, steal bases, and excite us again! My his breath, still lingering in the Park, now Bush 3, inspire a rebirth of speed, defense, pitching, and baseball joy in STL! Whitey is with God, celebrating again!
