You were one of the first silk screen printing dudes I came across years back on YouTube and you still rule over all the other new print shop tubers 🤘😝👍

Nice tips! I agree, if you want o print flatwork like posters and cards you have to sink the hinge clamps into the board to lower the off contact. Good idea with the WD40 too. Thanks for your input. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! ☠

I like how simple this is! what you are describing is called a recessed hinge. You can use a router saw to cut it or use a woodworking chisels to cut out the wood by hand.

I print posters and use these hinge clamps. I made my own vacuum table from MDF. A couple observations you made are critical for paper printing like this:

1) I had to recess the clamps into the MDF a bit to get them lower and closer to the paper. The off-contact was just too much for poster printing. I use old plastic poker chips on the other end to support the screen with about 1/8" off-contact.

2) I also found the hinges need WD-40 every few weeks. They seize up for some reason.

Thanks just bought the hinges clamps going to go get the wood at hardware store and make my own screen print for my class. We only have 20 total and there are 30 students, so its almost like we have to share then wait time for screen filler dry time or sketching time in my book. What my teacher did was put a large piece of clear plastic very thin but flexible so we can see where the print is printing. We then put our paper or t-shirt under that plastic then use masking tape to aline it so it matches up with all the prints on the paper or t-shirt. Going to save this video on my iphone for the future.

You’re welcome, glad I could help out. It was an extra oversized pallet I had for my textile press. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! ☠

That sounds like it would work for poster printing. Thanks for sharing. For tee shirts you can use the space for an insert board that will keep ink from passing through to the back of the shirt. Thanks so much for watching and dropping me a note. ☠

Thanks for the great video Jonathan, that really is a good way to get started on a shoestring budget! One can always upgrade to a better product/machine/print station when funds are available. I enjoy all your videos and have learned so much, am itching to get started soon.... :-)

i just bought 7 of these hinges for $37 total on Ebay. After seeing this video I have concluded that I got a fantastic deal. I was about to spend more on a 4 color station but after having seen this video i realize that all i will need to start with is 3 flat boards. Wow! Now i just need to figure out where and what kind of boards to use AND how to keep them held back with a spring. Thumbs up Catspit, and may the Lord God almighty bless you with repentance!

Thank you, my pleasure to help out. Not exactly sure what you mean. You would need to print it flat I think before the fabric is on the lamp shade frame. Otherwise it would have to be a custom jig set up to print on only a portion at a time. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! ☠

Thank you and you’re very welcome. I appreciate your time and support. Yes a router or similar tool would be perfect to recess the clamps. I don’t own any wood working tools however. Maybe I should buy some... LOL. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! ☠

Thank you so much for your advice. Very helpful to me. I just bought clamps & was going to fit them but with the non contact gap it's going to be a problem. Good to know !
