Attempting to avoid the complexity of Photoshop, I tested several other background-removal tools. They all failed to work well for me in some way. Switching back to PhotoShop - after watching 54 seconds of this video, I was able to efficiently and precisely remove the background. Thank you for the excellent instruction!
