SAS Combat Simulator Longplay (C64) [50 FPS]

Developed by Vision Software and published by Codemasters in 1989.

If this game is a combat simulator for the SAS then it would be teaching them that the enemy will regularly throw grenades backwards, leave the field of battle for no reason and that you can expect to find glowing smart-bombs that will make everyone within 100 metres evaporate.

I got this as part of a Codemasters multi-game tape and it was probably the best on it. However, I think "SAS Combat Simulator" is stretching the truth somewhat...

Anyway, the game is broken down into a series of missions, each of which has 2 stages. The first stage is always an overhead shooting section akin to Commando and the second stage is side-scrolling stab-fest identical to Green Beret. The side-scrolling section is easily the harder of the two sections due to the speed some of the soldiers run at you; I'm guessing the army must have recruited a lot of Olympic Sprinters that year.

It's certainly not a bad game and for the few quid it cost, you'd find it difficult to feel disappointed with it.

Enjoy!

The Green Beret stages were very difficult, but thanks to the magic of emulators and re-recording, you don't have to see all the times I died ;)

Always liked this game. Plays like a cross between Green Beret (minus the platforming)in the side scrolling "walking" sections and Ikari Warriors. I had the Spectrum version though.

Ahh memories. I only ever got to the second Green Beret part as you call it, you made it look easy though. I remember it being more difficult, maybe something to do with the cheetah joystick i had, thanks.

Nice budget game! The only thing I don't like is the grinding "music" during the Green Beret-like stages, it is REALLY annoying!
