In this episode, I discuss multiple sclerosis with leading neurologist Stephen Hauser, Director of the UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences. Our discussion traces the early life and career influences that guided him to study neuroinflammatory brain diseases.

Stephen talks touchingly about his personal and clinical experience of neurological disorders, and the important roles mentors, from Har Gorbind Khorana to Raymond Adams, have influenced his thinking and laid the foundations of his research.

The podcast also chronicles the work he led in the early immunotherapy trials of MS, from cyclophosphamide and rituximab, and how his research opened the way to the current MS therapies and advanced our understanding of the genetics, immunology, and treatment of MS.

We also reviewed how his work led to the development of B cell therapies for MS patients, representing a powerful new approach for relapsing forms of the disease and the first therapy of proven value for progressive MS.

Previously chairman of the Department of Neurology at UCSF for 25 years, Stephen has also served as President of the American Neurological Association, President of the Medical Staff at UCSF, and editor-in-chief of Annals of Neurology.
