Not as highly unlikely as youd imagine: The paper 'Is the Solar System stable - Jacques Laskar' modelled the inner solar systems stability. It found in about 1% of cases Mercury gets way off track, and in a bunch of those scenarios the result is to destabilise the inner solar system entirely. Looking more closely at one of these, about quarter of the scenarios led to Earth being hit. (1 instance for Mercury, 29 for Mars, 18 for Venus, out of 201.)

The chances of this are still quite low; that particular scenario ending up with us getting hit in around 1 in 10, 000 cases, but looking at the overall chances its possibly around 1 in a 100 for any impact. Which, to me at least, was pretty amazing.

Not to worry though. The region these models are most accurate is around 100 million years and there isnt much of a problem by then. It can take billions of years for the chaos to manifest so we should have plenty of bigger fish to fry in the meantime.

[Edit: I should add, the models are looking at scenarios within the rough lifetime of Sol. Or 5Gyr to be precise.]

Chances of an interplanetary collision are very minuscule. But even a distant flyby of a rogue planet could permanently alter our orbit. Yay! More summer!
