Unsettling scene from Serial Experiments Lain

One of the biggest reasons this scene is as unsettling as it is is because of the art style, the way they all stare at her as if they want to kill her, it’s amazing. The dead look in everyone’s face as they stare her down.

Probably the most terrifying scene in this show for me. The moment the words "Peeping Tom" appeared on the subs my stomach immediately sank knowing what was going to happen to Lain. But they all just stared, which to me is infinitely worse than if they just made fun of her

Context:

Heavy spoilers to the whole series warning(though I doubt you would happen to watch it till the end)

Due to Lain being like a God and having a lot of mental disorders, there were many different godlike Lains and one of them, the laughing one(real Lain later strangles her), had seen Alisa masturbate(since all Lains are everywhere at the same time) and somehow managed to make it a public knowledge(perhaps with a video evidence). So, this scene is when the whole world around her gets fairly surprised that she peeped on Alisa and for some reason decided to tell the whole Internet(which is basically the whole real world at this point) that Alisa masturbates at dreams about a teacher. Real Lain though doesn't know what her another personality did and starts to panic like any socially anxious person would do. In the end of the scene, when Lain starts to mumble "Alisa, where are you?" she gets a message from her that basically states "Don't mind the rumors" which is a phrase from earlier episode. I guess it implicates that since it's not a rumor and everybody knows it, then there's really way to fix this situation physically.

This happened to me. Sleeping in class and only waking up by the volume of eyes glued to you, then time/class continuing as if the world stops when you aren't watching.
