Sight-Reading Made Simple (FREE 4-Lesson Course):

Learn Easy Chord Hacks:

Reading notes for the first time can be challenging and sometimes even overwhelming!

Even though it's challenging, reading music is VERY important for knowing what to play.

Sometimes, there are notes that are outside of the lines and the spaces in the music staff.

In this video, I'll show you my step by step process for learning how to read those tricky ledger lines notes QUICKLY.

I'll also work through some quick reviews for reading music!

Here's a quick look at the lesson!

- Treble clef ledger lines - 0:43
- Middle C - 2:44
- Above the bass clef - 3:55
- Below the treble clef - 4:50
- Below the bass clef - 5:25
- Final thoughts - 6:55

Learning how to read music can seem daunting, but once you learn the patterns it becomes easy to use and apply to the pieces that you want to play.

Happy practicing!!!

Excellent tips. I find the longer I've been into reading music, you start knowing what the notes are by just looking at them. So to all beginners out there, it may seem daunting at first, but the more reading music you do, you'll start to memorize what they are by just looking at them. Kind of like learning the alphabet when you were a child.

I am a mature adult who used to play piano when I was much younger and have picked up playing and studying again as a very enjoyable hobby. I have been so frustrated with my inability to read and recall notes south of bass clef. Thank you for this! It also helped to know you are not as auto sight reader as I would have imagined. Sometimes I feel like my brain will explode over the sheet music I’m thinking so hard.

Every Good Boy Deserves Favor (EGBDF) is for the lines on the treble clef while the space is FACE. It easy to understand through the acronyms. The Bass clef is Good Boy Deserves favor always while the space is All Cow eat grass (ACEG). THIS MADE ME UNDERSTOOD IT EASILY WHEN I WAS LEARNING MINE.

I cannot read notes. I am indeed so happy I found your channel. I was able to play my first piano piece in a week's time. I practiced on a keyboard and once I have memorized the chords I played it on the piano and my Mum asked me where I got the music sheet you cannot read notes and I told her...You Tube. Am truly grateful

Great job explaining ledger lines. I had forgotten about “All cows eat grass” for bass. Now thanks to you, I can use that to help me with the lower lines.

Hi! I'm a russian. I learn english and for my practice to see this chanel. I've learnt playing piano a few years ago, but only now I knowed what notes on the lines are in alphabetical order. It's absolutely convinient for sheet reading. The notes have a diffrent name in post-Soviet countries. Thank you.

I like your video's so much! The note reading, the technique exercises..
I have a request for a beginners video: an exercise for reading while playing, something where you maybe show a note, leave some time for the viewer to play it and then tell and show us (direct feedback). It can start with a scale from middle C, where we just play along (while you play AND name AND show the notation of the note) to get the hang of it, and after that mixing them all up with some time to think.
I have learned the notations of the keys, but it is so hard to read a note and translate it to the right key! Maybe you think it's to simplistic but I think they might be a good addition to your videos on learning to sight read.

THANKS for bringing complexity down to manageable levels; your videos remind me that it's all about music.... not "technique" or fearful apprehensions. Play like your heart is in it.
