Is TrackIR Head Tracking for Triple Screens Worth It

preview_player
Показать описание
In the hopes of adding another layer of immersion to my triple screen setup for sim racing, I bought the TrackIR 5. I wanted to add the parallax movement in objects in the distance on the screen when moving my head in the rig but primarily to animate the car mirrors to move in sync with my movements. In this video, I unbox, setup, and review this head tracking product.

27:00 That "feature" is the deadzone/sensitivity setting you can adjust with TrackIR. My setting is that when I'm looking forward, subtle movements wont' make TrackIR move the camera. I even removed Yaw, because it keeps moving my centre view...Haha. Only the mirrors move, but not your cockpit? I don't think that sim will ever be made! XD

How would you expect the cockpit not to "move" when you turn your head? It's a weird effect having the HUD follow your view instead of staying where it should but in the end this is really an alternative for people running single screen but wanting/needing the benefits of triple screens (for simracing) or VR (for simracing or flight sims). Having your head movement only effect the mirrors would be pretty unrealistic

Interesting outcome. I have been using head tracking for six years in racing software.
One day I aim to be in the exact same position as you and obtain a triple monitor setup.
And be exactly where you are right now where I do want everything to move with my head, dashboard in car included.

Head tracking is not selective; you can't choose what will and won't move.
The idea I had to let go was that the monitor(s) no longer equaled to being a set point of view. It is only now a window to look through.
Having the hardware dashboard you rely on be stationary and not move with head tracking isn't the reason to stop using head tracking.
You need more time for your brain to get accustomed to real life and virtual life being disparate.

I'd be happy to have your issues as I'm ready to accommodate the difference between what's going on in the monitor compared to what doesn't move outside the monitor.
Give it more time. And some more tweaking of the ratios with rotations (yaw, pitch, roll) and transitions (x, y, z). They seem unnatural to me.

For reference, I use DelanClip Gamer with IR and PS3 Eye camera with OpenTrack as the software.

If you want the cars directon to be aligned to the monitors, you simply disable yaw, pitch and roll, so only the movement on the X, Y and Z axis is active. As I understand you, this is what you hoped for. On a single monitor on the other hand, you'd want to use the Yaw also. Some might like to use the pitch also.

I know exactly the effect you're after.
I think it would require either the game developers or a 3rd party to create something which fixed the "cockpit drivers eye view" but the mirrors would still take notice of track IR position. I can't imagine it would be the hardest thing to achieve..

I guess it depends on whether the mirrors work off the drivers eye view or if they are independent..

You've reviewed lots of interesting stuff on this channel, nearly all of the things which I had thought "I wonder how this would look/work". Appreciated!

you want to achive something like "Head Tracking for Desktop VR Displays using the WiiRemote" of Johny Lee. (search the video if you like). It is a little tricky to do. You must disable the z axis movement (it does not cooperate well). You need linear movement on x and y and i guess 1:1. You must set Yaw and Pitch linear to X and Y, and adjust how much that chacge. It is very tricky to get right and if it is wrong it will throw you off.
There are some calculation involved and depends on the size (height) of your screens, and the distance to the screens (and it depends on the title). But its not necessery. Try and error might get you there. Good luck

You have to minimize the range of motion so you the minimum movement

If you made this work make an update video! The tech is here - just subscribed, I've got a rig I'm wanting to show soon

22:55 where yiu keep clipping back to centre is because i racing does not allow you out of the car i noticed this in VR. If i try to lean out the car it just jumps me back in

according to the video, iracing is 100% accurate! I mean if you move your head in a real car, everything move too, bcz the relative position move, human eyes will re focus on dashboard or something, to calibrate it, lets take an example, just watch something in real life, and move your head but DONT move you eye ball (dont turn it), you will find that thing move in your sight too

3:14 I have Nvidia 3D Vision 2 goggles and with OLD Nvidia Drivers I get 3D vision...but only in OLD games like Assetto Corsa. And Elite Dangerous. ;) It does give (sometimes) a *toybox (your monitor is a box/window with 3D objects in it) kind of feeling. So it doesn't feel like you're INSIDE the game, but the 3D effects are simply fun. And I can even shoot at some stuff without using crosshairs (Aliens vs Predator 2) because of the perfect sense of depth!

I'm asking myself a question.. Would you say this TrackIR can be "more" useful in another game like FlightSimulator or Arma ? I was thinking that in racing simulations, you don't move your head enough to have a real benefits using an eyetracker, especially with triple screen. I discovered your video late, I know, but I'm at the same point as you were 2 years ago ^^

it is a nice piece of technology but i also noticed it take's away immersiveness only due the fact that it turns the virtual world in relation to your physical body wich is not turning with the virtual.

Nice video! Imagine this with a first person shooter.
Maybe you can mount your dash/phone somehow to your steering wheel in a way that it won't rotate when you rotate the steering wheel. That might give you the separation you need because it will be lower than the screens.

I have a Single screen Monitor, i hope to See left and right
With them. Maybe i will buy one 😄

Great video again! 😊

G Racing Team Boosted Media made a video not long ago using track ir on his motion rig not sure if that helps.

Nice stuff man.
I think boosted media made a video a while ago on how to have like a real back mirror, by using a tablet and making it display only the mirror somehow.
Give that a look and see if you can do the same while applying the trackIR effect only on that, not your main PC.
