Frederick is credited with expanding the 25 Degree Rite of Perfection, which is thought to have originated in France, to the 33 Degree system, now known as the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite. The symbol of Scottish Rite Freemasonry is the double headed eagle, which was an emblem of Hohenzollern dynasty, to which Frederick belonged. This in turn was symbolic of the Holy Roman Empire, which adopted it from the divided late Roman Empire, in which it symbolized one head looking to the Western Empire and one to the Eastern Empire.
