Some years ago, my ex boss was filipina and she took this to a potluck. I must have eaten more than half of the container since none of my fellow judgemental mexicans wanted to try it. Now everytime I see it it brings back good memories!

This is called Wajik in Indonesia. And traditionally, we serve this in weddings. I think the stickyness of this dessert symbolize the hope for the couple to be stick together forever 😊❤

It's is very similar to a south Indian dessert called "sweet Pongal". This is made with milk, rice, jaggery, cardamom and served hot on a banana leaf. People often improvise this according to their liking. Love from India 🇮🇳❤️

I was engaged to a man who was Filipino, the relationship didn’t work out but my love for the food did. Tell me though this does not look like German chocolate cake from the top?

Biko (米糕) means 'rice cake' in Hokkien, except Hokkien biko is invariably savoury! Glutinous rice stir fried with stuff and then steamed until sticky. This biko looks so good though!

Wow, it's just so amazing how a lot of dishes in south east asia looked so similar to each other. In Malaysia, they have a similar dessert called "pulut kacau" which has 2 variations. The first one looked like in this video, while the second one is pink made with rose syrup

Southeast asian cuisine is sooo underrated. The Northeastern Asians always get the attention (Japan, China, Korea)... And especially teh Philippines, Filipino cuisine is a melting pot of Spanish, Northa nd South East Asian, and even Indian cuisine...

It is similar to jaggery rice made in india on Vasant Panchami ( a festival to please ma saraswati / goddess of intellect ) .

We add cashews, raisins, almonds, cardamom powder to it. Sometimes grated / thinly sliced coconut is also added .

It made me really sad when I made biko and brought it to Christmas dinner a few years back and barely anyone ate it, but that just meant I got to eat a bunch of it so I guess it worked out :)

We use muscovado for our biko instead of just brown sugar for that deeper color and flavor 😊

I’ve had this before! My Filipino friends at church used to bring so many yummy Filipino dishes. This is one of my fav among those. I remember I had a similar one made with purple rice as well. Could you make a video on those?

My lola that married into the family doesn’t like to cook much, but whenever we would go visit her as kids, she’d make us sweets. Biko was my favorite of what she made and still is one of my favorite desserts nowadays. Though I have all the ingredients and have tried, I still can’t quite get it like her’s. I want to visit her so we can recipe swap- her biko for one of the desserts or breads I make. Thank you for sharing this, Jeanelle! Glad to hear they liked it! 💜🐰✨
