OUTSIDE SKI PRESSURE | What is the perfect amount?

One of the most important skills in skiing is the ability to balance against the outside ski. What's the perfect amount and how do you know when you've got there? Let us know in the comments below...

In this video, APSI Ski Instructor Tom Gellie uses Carv's 'Outside:Inside Pressure Monitor' to dial in his outside ski pressure, live on every turn.

Want to know what percentage of your pressure is on the outside ski? Carv's Monitor Mode will tell you in real time so you can develop your own alpine skiing technique.

Why is it awesome to have live data on every turn?
One of the hardest parts of improving your skiing is to know what different techniques feel like. We designed monitor mode so you can get an accurate picture of what's going on in your ski boots. Make adjustments with immediate feedback and lock in that feeling when you hit your target score.

The Outside:Inside Pressure Monitor is just one of many Carv real-time monitors. In this year's app you can also get a live feed for your edge angle, parallel skiing, edge similarity, balance and more.

How do you put more weight/pressure on the outside ski? Easy. Take weight off the inside ski. I'm glad to hear you mention this. I'm amazed how many skiers don't understand this concept.

I love this mode - it really helped me improve my high edge anlge carving. My hips not quite to the ground like Tom Gellie but I can dream...

All your hints in this channel are really helpful and the combination with the carv inlays really help!

Hi Tom. I have a home made turn developed with loving care over the last 40 years. I couldn't be happier with it, and am curious about what the charming Ms Carv would have to say about it.

During my transitions, both skis are airborne. Usually just a few millimeters and for a fraction of a second. Both would be registering 0 pressure for that moment. My inside ski doesn't touch the snow until the end of the turn when I load it up for the transition. Until then my outside ski pressure would be 100%. When I'm loading up my inside ski, it's closer to 50/50. How would Carv handle that data set? Average? Peak? Magic 8 Ball?

Anyway, I enjoy your videos. Thanks.

Pressure control tip: Lift your inside ski off the snow and your outside ski pressure will be 100%. Put your inside ski on the snow and bend it until it feels right to balance the pressure on both skis when it's the right time. Timing is everything.

nice to know even Tom Gellie has a good side ... and a bad side ... just like everyone else ... He was consistenly better on the right side then the left side.

So under what conditions should the outside pressure be less? Powder vs hardback? And what percentages?

On a slope like the one in the video to maximise my outside ski pressure I lift my inside ski off the snow completely when going fast. I would not know if doing that is something recommended by ski schools though. Another thing is to pretend there is someone wanting to take a photo of the base of your outside ski as you turn which if you look at ski racer photos you can see the symbol on the base of their skis when they turn hard.

Seems to be a right leg bias? Are you right handed? I. E. right side is dominant.

If I start to 'chatter' on hard pack or ice, that tells me. Just a little inside pressure might quiet that down. Mountain gives you the feedback. Chatter real bad, and it is sort of late.

What is the ideal % on outside ski? How much does that vary depending upon snow conditions, terrain, etc?

So for me it's a case of L - R comparisons. In Tom's video there was often an early 80% compared to a mid 70%, it happened at least twice - and Tom's a very acomplished skier as well. If you wanted 100%, just lift off the inside ski completely, no problem. Where you apply pressure, at what phase of the turn is also very important - how to increase or relax pressure dynamically very important to. Achieving a 100% score for outside ski pressure isn't a parameter of good skiing alone is what i'm saying...It could be a useful tool if used under a form of instruction, but just on it's own, without any other help it won't make you into a good skier.

Neat technology, but I'm definitely more of a purest.. prefer to listen, feel, and see the world around me, not an app.. especially when skiing.. That said, I'm super curious about this app, and would love to test it out one day.

For me - the monitors always tell me the number just about 1/2 second to a second too late. Usually I get a number read to me as I am already rolling into the next turn. It's quite disorienting - my focus is already on the next turn and I'm getting feedback for the previous turn. This video presents is as if number is read as he's 3/4 way into the turn, but that's not my experience at all. It's my experience with all the monitors. Wish there was a setting in the app to tweak this, but I don't see any.

Ive recently seen one of your videos where you were trying to match inside and outside (uphill/downhill) ski pressure. When would you want to match pressure vs having a high outside. Or where you talking about pressure and edge angle separately?

Hi! I don’t understand how this app works... Do you have something in your shoes or on your skis? How can it mesure the pressure? Thank’s for your answer

#Tom so what should the pressure on the outside ski be, say at the apex of the turn on the slope you were on, 90%, 95%, 99%? Trainers will often say you need to put all your weight on the outside ski, but do they really mean that say on a fairly steep hard packed piste?

Is Carv capable of reading the amount/degree of edge angle or just pressure?
