Thanks for the generous sharing, Fishman! I've been contemplating a hybrid filtration system dubbed the algae-scrubber-UGF which utilizes 12 hours of night-time illumination below the plates to promote nutrient uptake round the clock. Clearly, based on your video here a freshwater system might benefit from such a system but not so for marine tanks, which tend to be way more touchy.

I’ve done a reverse flow under gravel filter on salt with a pump using crushed coral. I use a marineland H.O.T. 250 for polishing. But I had live rock and fish. It seemed fine, but I had no idea what I was doing so I stocked it lightly, cause I was poor and salt fish are pricy. 😂. It was a 110 show tank. After a couple years I added a protein skimmer but it seemed about the same, I just got it because my fish store said I had to with salt. I think I changed about 25-30 once a month. All I did was measure salinity. Lol I didn’t kill the fish so I’m guessing it worked.

"Failures" only improve our knowledge and set us up for more "successes". Thanks Fred O

I would also think that due to the large nature of the coral gravel you used in the ug filter, ( rather than compact gravel in the fresh water tanks) the water was being drawn through the filter via the air lift will just find the easiest route, so most of the water and flow was being drawn from just under the uplift, you can see this as there is no cyano directly under the air lift due to the increased flow . This shows that most of the water was only being drawn through the coral in this area.

Intresting I would never imagine that 🤔

Algae (any cyano) isn't bad for freshwater tanks because it draws out nutrients from the water column. Is it bad in salt because it releases a toxin or something?
