Nice little board and tutorial. There is another little Espressif IC that is compatible with the 8266 called the ESP8285. I haven't tried it yet but I came across an upload where someone else made their own board using one. The main difference is that the 8285 incorporated 1mb of internal flash inside the chip. This eliminates the need for the external memory required to use the bare 8266 IC. We still need a ceramic antenna (unless you're a RF wizard), crystal, and a few discrete components. The 8285 chip came out much later than the 8266, in 2016, so it wasn't an option originally and has, figuratively speaking, 'fallen between the cracks' due to the market familiarity of the original and introduction of the ESP32.
Overall, the ESP8285 just lowers the BOM on an integrated design :)

I do not see why you say MPLAB and XC8. There's absolutely nothing Microchip in this video. And to make things far worse, you use the Arduino IDE.

Nice try but this is pretty much useless if its a "tutorial", specially when you're using Arduino and NOT MPLAB. Its 2 WIRES through USART; not that complicated! No need to see a lot of soldering or stuff. Change the title, its misleading!

I gave you a negative like because you wrote in the title that it was a tutorial on ESP8266 with MPLAB development ide, but you used Arduino. This is titled FACK 👎
