Hey Trogly, just pointing out, that heartwood is still curly maple, it’s a maple top. All trees have sapwood and heartwood, and with most trees the heartwood is the sought after part, walnut heartwood is that pretty brown, where the sapwood is a lighter color. Maple is unusual where it’s the light colored sapwood that’s generally sought after while the darker heartwood isn’t. I work in a shop that deals almost exclusively with Birdseye and Curly maple. Our instrument clients buy exclusively white meat sapwood, which I always find kind of a shame cause I love the look of the darker heartwood, which also is often very heavily figured. That being said, maple heartwood is a lot less stable and if cracks develop in a board odds are it’s going to be in the heartwood.

The last one shown was absolutely mind-blowing. I think that was the most awesome quilt top that I have ever seen in my entire life. And to top it off with my favorite color just made it the best Les Paul I've ever seen, bar none. I would kill to have that guitar.
Simply unbelievable.

The purple LP is without question my favorite, killer top and the back is probably better in person.

(1:52) This Custom IS a maple topped guitar. The term “heartwood” refers to the inner wood of the tree, where the wood is hardest. The layers of the tree are: bark, sapwood, and heartwood (concentrically). There is a mild to strong color difference between sapwood and heartwood.

Quilted maple + purple + Les Paul Custom
So many virtues together!

When I see nice grain finishes all I think about is PRS. Les Paul Customs look so good in a strong wood grain finish but they’re always painted over which isn’t always a bad thing but I prefer the natural grain look. I always enjoy seeing these types of Les Pauls (minus the tie-die) but I just can’t bring myself to spend 5k on a guitar and it not be a PRS anymore, 10 years ago I’d be buying one of these, now days I’ll just appreciate from afar.

Lots of great axes on this episode. I'm not that into purple, but that quilt top is amazing.

That natural heartwood is a beauty. I’m a sucker for natural finishes.

I've had my eye on the spangly purple one bottom left at 6:33 for a while, I look at it the same way Wayne looks at the white strat :)

The Tie-Dye really tickled my 90s nostalgia. To have taken the stage of an outdoor festival playing that guitar would’ve made you the coolest.
Of course the purple guitar is beautiful and elegant, but it doesn’t feel like you would throw it into the back of a van to go rock some small sweaty club.

Mr. Trogly, the term "heartwood" refers to where in the tree the wood was cut from, not it's type. Still maple (probably), just cut from the very center of the log.

That 57 Koa wood reissues color really reminded me of my 69 es-335 walnut it’s very similar in color. It looked like a walnut LP. Really cool.

Hey, that purple beastie is where I live, Ottawa, Ontario Canada! Probably not a price I would pay, but it might be fun to go down and check it out...maybe get a few photos of it to see if that difference in shading is there...

The ''Heartwood'' custom is still a Maple top, it just includes heartwood, which is the inner wood that is darker compared to the sapwood. Dark Walnut is also heartwood where the sapwood from Walnut is very light in colour.
