WHO I AM

Hello, I'm Jen Campbell. I'm an award-winning poet and bestselling author of twelve books, spanning short stories, poetry, picture books, and nonfiction.

My books for adults include The Beginning of the World in the Middle of the Night, The Girl Aquarium, The Bookshop Book, and The Sunday Times bestselling Weird Things Customers Say in Bookshops series. My picture book trilogy Franklin and Luna, and my middle-grade book The Sister Who Ate Her Brothers, are published by Thames & Hudson.

I've won both an Eric Gregory Award and the Jane Martin Poetry Prize, my books have been translated into twenty languages, and I have two new titles forthcoming in 2023 — more details on those soon.

I've worked in the publishing industry for over fifteen years, initially as a bookseller, and now as a freelance editor, content creator and disability advocate. I review books online, in print and on the radio. I run a Youtube channel where I talk about books, the history of fairy tales, and the representation of disability and disfigurement. I also offer online writing workshops and editorial services, give talks at schools, publishing companies, universities and book festivals on a variety of topics, and I run a book club for TOAST clothing.

Oh, those horses were GORGEOUS! I would have been sorely tempted to engage with them; although, I believe you’ve mentioned in the past that they are wild horses. I just adore them.

I quite enjoy Clare Mackintosh’s books. My favorite by far was Let Me Lie. I would definitely recommend it.

If you liked descriptions of police work in Claire Mackintosh I think you may enjoy her book I See You. There is also a female detective there.

Your vlogs feed my soul Jen. I've just finished a Dulcie Schwartz feline mystery called Grey Howl by Clea Simon, which Publishers Weekly called a "Winning combination of academic rivalries, student relationship drama and kitty wisdom". Right up my street. About a third of the way through I thought I'm not 'getting' this book. I did read it to the end though 😏xxx

I feel very validated by you saying that Milkman was difficult to get to grips with, because I had the same experience!

Where did you go, it looks beautiful?
I absolutely loved Milkman by Anna Burns - I listened on audio and this was an amazing experience. Maybe you could try that for Chinatown??
I really love Jessie Greengrass & Constellations by Sinead Gleeson, so I'm thinking voyager would also be one for me, based upon what you said!
Also how cool is the name and the cover Ms Ice Sandwich.. Although I always thought it was ice cream sandwich too! Xx

i read the macintosh some years ago and i just went back and read the review and it seems close to your thoughts..

i have mixed feelings about this. there were some awful contrived, false notes but she can hold one's attention. the police seemed inept and the romantic subplot was unpleasant. i kept hoping it wouldn't end the way it in fact did. and i envy your super abundance of so many beautiful shells on the
