Sputum Culture and Sensitivity | Sputum Sample | Labs 🧪...Sputum culture and sensitivity can help diagnose pneumonia (lung infection), lung abscess, bronchiectasis, and bronchitis. Sputum cytology is used to diagnose lung cancer. The most common cause of typical community-acquired pneumonia is streptococcus pneumonia.

Sputum cultures always take awhile to comeback from the lab.
Also wanted to say thank you medicosis for being so awesome. When I graduate med school one day, I would like to be your resident.

As an ex- histology lab assistant I wasn't aware how long a culture for TB takes to get back and I'm currently waiting. When you said 6-8 wks I nearly died from the shock. I can only hope they start me on antibiotics before then! I definitely won't be complaining!! 😅😅😅

I love your videos they are so clear and concise. Still I have 2 questions: does sputum culture diagnose Bronchiectasis?. I know that B is an enlargement of the airways (normally seen in x-ray) that can or cannot lead to infection. Sputum culture may diagnose Tuberculosis.
Second: normally antibiotics do not kill the bacteria, as you says, they stop the growth. Thanks keep up the good work!

a question, if you produce more sputum, say using hypertonic saline, doesn't that give more volume for the bacteria to grow?

Cheer~~~a mixture of saliva and mucus coughed up from the respiratory tract, typically as a result of infection or other disease and often examined microscopically to aid medical diagnosis.😊

What if I coughed it onto a paper towel first thing in the morning? My appointment isn’t till 1:40 pm today. Is that good enough?
