In a tragic statement released on Saturday, Ron Barassi's family announced the news that the AFL icon has passed away at the age of 87.

"Ronald Dale Barassi, 87, left us today due to complications from a fall after a full and extraordinary life," the statement stated.

"He passed away in the company of his loving family. We must have some time alone right now.

After 253 senior VFL games—204 for Melbourne and 49 for Carlton—Barassi became the first player to be inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame as a Legend.

Barassi won ten premierships as a player or coach for Melbourne, Carlton, and North Melbourne.According to Albanese, Barassi was a true legend of the sport.

In a memorial posted to X (previously Twitter), Albanese wrote, "There is no more famous name in football than Ron Barassi, and there is no one who gave more to the game that millions love."

In every sense of the term, Ron Barassi was a legend. A courageous athlete and captain, an innovative trainer, and a devoted supporter of the sport of Australian rules football.

As long as football is played, people will remember Ron and his accomplishments.

During his tenure at Arden Street (1973-1980), North Melbourne won their first championship in 1975 and their second championship in the 1977 grand final replay following a heart-stopping tie. Despite spending five seasons back in his spiritual home, he was unable to improve Melbourne's record.
