Maybe average points on drives that start between the 40-49 dip lower because that sample includes many failed onside kicks at the end of games, meaning the offense is probably in a situation where they just finish running the clock out and aren't really trying to score

I can think of a college game where they punted on first down to get yards.
The field conditions were so horrible, there was so much snow on the ground, neither team was actually playing football. They were just sliding around on the snow with one guy folding a football.
So they started punting on first down to back their opponent towards their own endzone.
The object being the opposing team couldn't get anywhere either, forcing them to punt . So by punting on first down you've gained yardage.
I believe the team that lost got one first down. The team that won had no first downs.
