Some of the greatest minds in education have challenged us to look beyond the framework of our current English language classrooms to prepare students for the difficulties posed by an unknown future by deepening teaching to include the 21st century skills of flexibility, adaptability, leadership, creative and critical thinking, entrepreneurship, cross-cultural understanding, and learning with technology. How do we teach all these elements and maintain the curriculum imposed on us by a traditional approach to teaching? The presenter connects community service and social media with developing the 21st century skills outlined above by outlining a project-based approach to engaging with the students’ local community.
