Harnessing the Power of Geophysical Imaging to Recharge California’s Groundwater (SDSS-XGP150)

Groundwater is a vital resource – providing water for homes, farms, communities, businesses, and the natural environment. In many places groundwater is being pumped faster than is naturally recharging, leaving the system in imbalance. Increasing the natural recharge with Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) is a strategy to help bring the system into balance. Locating the best sites for MAR however, is often difficult.

In this course, you will learn how to determine whether one attribute of a site is optimal for efficiently moving water from the ground surface down to the water table. In other words, are there “fast paths” that can be located with geophysical imaging. You will also learn how to use the Stanford School of Sustainability Fastpath application.
