Shaw is literally the only character in the movie that notices the animals doing human things, it's actually pretty fascinating.

Its interesting when a villain has a moment of introspection and questions their own actions. Its a great way to humanize them. I also like the fact he actually cares about other people and tries to warn/protect them from what he sees as a possible apocalyptic event. He's a weirdly nuanced antagonist for a kids movie.

What's interesting about Shaw is that unlike other hunter villains, who disrespect animals as lesser than them, Shaw is motivated by fear of them becoming superior. For one, he saw Boog save Elliot and Elliot walking on his hind legs drinking coffee and he didn't ignore it, he recognized and understood what was really going on. He always loved hunting but now he sees it as some sacred duty to preserve the "natural order".
