I got the Derale Atomic Cool as part of my XJ overheating problem attack plan (along with new rad, fan and shrouds). I also installed a trans temperature gauge and noticed the transmission heats up more than the engine under some conditions, so I’m very glad I got the trans cooler. It makes sense since youre spinning the wheels etc. During the install I discovered the stock trans cooler was clogged, along with lots of bent and kinked trans lines. Night and day for me, all my heating issues were solved.

My stock trans line on my daily 00 finally rusted through (thanks PA) so its time to order this. Thank you for being in depth with this!

Nice! I definitely wanted to do this before I ended up doing a manual swap on my XJ.

I’d say a bit of advice would be to look into a thermostatic control for it. That way you never have to worry about turning the fan on or off, cause while it may not be near as bad, over cooling isn’t good for an auto.

Before I manual swapped, I bought a thermostatic control from American volt. The AW4 operating range is 125°-175°, and I got a thermostatic switch that would turn on at 150° and turn off at 135°. That way it’s always keeping it in range. The kit comes with the hose barbs too so it’s incredibly easy to do. The solenoid control would just be *before* the cooler and you’d have a solenoid signal wired up to it. Such as battery positive to the switch, then the switch to the solenoid. And then maybe your ground runs through the solenoid. And it’ll turn on the fan on and off as you see fit, and you could even have a manual override too. Just an idea if you’re interested in having an “out of sight, out of mind” approach. I like to drive hard in the sand, so a cooler was a big priority while I still had the auto

Great video! I loved watching. Glad to see there’s videos that aren’t just using the average cooler, and now showing fan cooled ones too

Looks nice. Could you weld a piece of angle iron on the backside of that piece its bolted to in order to protect the fittings?

Nice set up . Question - could there be a air pocket problem mounting with the trans cooler connections both on the bottom ?

A year later… looking to add a similar cooler to my JK. How has this model done with your trans temps?

Do you have a trans temp guage to monitor your temperature?

Why didn’t you add more weld? 4 small tacks when you could have put two 1 inch beads on the top edge.
This is one of those mods that no one notices, but are critically important, .

I don’t think you’re supposed to put Teflon tape on AN fittings..
Job well done!!!

This is exactly what I need! It looks expensive though :/

Is the fan designed to be either a push or full fan?

So for your transmission line routes, do you still have the lines going to the radiator or is going straight from the trans to the new cooler and back?
