Today, I respond to Richard Hammond's "roast" of my McLaren P1 project. I think he's utterly wrong, but you can be the judge of that. I still think it's an incredible honor to be mentioned by one of my automotive idols and I can't wait to show him the car and prove him wrong on his home turf!

Cant wait to see Richard drive the P1 when finished but remember he does have a tendency to crash them too.

BEFORE you let Richard drive it. Please do your speed run, break the records, take photo's and video, pick up your dry cleaning, let Ed drive it, stop by Hoovies, drop your Meemaw off at the airport with it and once your tired of the car THEN you can let Hammond drive it. His track record with super fast cars is sketchy at best!

Im from the UK and about Hammonds age and i'm all for what you're doing to the P1. You got a car that should've been scrap and brought it back to life, it's never going to be original after all that damage.

I'd have to agree with Richard here. While a car is not just it's engine, the hybrid assembly is actually 2 engines. A different engine has an effect on HOW it delivers power (not necessarily worse or better, just different), which has on effect on how you drive it. Also, as you said, ditching that battery saves weight.... which has an effect on how the car handles. Also - a lot of the decisions made for the car where made with the hybrid system in mind - either to take advantage of it or to workaround some of it's problems. Ditching it makes some decisions non-relevant. All these little things do slowly but steadily steer the car away from it's vision (for better or for worse). In short - it is most definitely not P1, but I'm not sure if that's a bad thing :) . And most definitely not dumb as a brick!

British viewer here!. It's an age thing Freddy, take Mr Armstrong, repairs cars and improves them, but the older British generation will only restore, taking a vehicle back to its original state. It will happen to all of us in the UK as we get older 🤣

Ok, think about this, Nascar uses Toyotas, Chevys, Fords, etc.... The bodies may be that model of vehicle but all the "Guts" have been modified. At the end of the day, they are still labeled as Fords, Chevys, Toyota, etc....
Mr. Hammond is a great person to critique you, but I agree with you! It will still be a P1 and whenever you are finished, people will see you drive by and say, "Hey that's Tavarish driving his P1", Not " Hey that's Tavarish driving his fabricated McLaren!"

I love the project and I'm super excited to see it completed.

But there's a difference between a restoration and modification. They are two very different visions. And it's not "being British" that dictates it. There's plenty of guys who mod in the UK. But there is a difference between putting a wrap and adjustable springs on a car and changing the engine, the loom, the body and a key element of the drivetrain that makes it stand out from any other car on the road.

You advertised the P1 initially as a restoration. Understandably that changed. It's a cool new vision and we're excited to see how it goes. I do however think Hammonds comments are fair. It's no longer a P1. Only McLaren can decide what constitutes a P1 (just like only an American can decide what the US constitution should say 😝) That's not because they were trying to hold back in any way. They just sat in a design room with a vision. The choices they made created a unique car and should be respected. It's what makes a P1 a P1 and an Enzo an Enzo.

This in no way disrespects what you're doing Freddie. It's awesome and I love it. ❤

I think the ultimate truth here is that Hammond's not wrong- the P1 as a concept was designed to blend the specific abilities of a hybrid system into an already capable drivetrain design. What his comments are, well, they're kind of irrelevant. If Freddy had an unlimited budget and his own dedicated skunkworks, sure. He could fold in the newest, craziest, most capable hybrid system into his rebuilt car, making it a true P1 evolution. We all know that was never on the table. What he has done, like a deft surgeon, removed the bits that could not be saved, upgraded the bits that he could, and will be sending out into the world a renewed car to be enjoyed that will run rings around its prior self. Will it be a P1? No. Will it be beautiful? Yes. Will it be fast? Oh my, yes. It will be unique, and alive, and Freddy's. Without his vision to see this thing through, that car was destined to be broken down into parts. Parts plus 2 or three full sandbags. Freddy saved it from that fate, and gave us all a reason to tune in to watch the fun. Hammond was correct, but it didn't make him right.

Technically, it’s a P1 legally, as long as the firewall and VIN are intact.
Build a cool P1. It’s your car, it was going to be parts.
