About the Classical Ballet and Opera House

The Classical Ballet and Opera House is known for its traditional productions of ballet and opera. Their performances feature authentic choreography, elegant costumes, and beautifully designed sets, making them a favorite among audiences who appreciate classic ballet.

If this Nutcracker performance is from the Classical Ballet and Opera House, it likely follows the original choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, set to Tchaikovsky’s iconic music. First staged by this company in 2013, this production has been performed multiple times, maintaining its traditional and visually stunning appeal.

Key Features of This Production
Authentic Choreography – Based on the original Petipa-Ivanov version, preserving the essence of classical ballet.
Elegant Costumes and Set Design – Beautifully detailed costumes and grand stage settings that bring the story to life.
Tchaikovsky’s Music – A full performance of the famous score, including well-known pieces like Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Waltz of the Flowers, and Trepak.
Clear Storytelling – A well-paced, engaging performance that appeals to all ages.
Scene-by-Scene Breakdown
Act I: Christmas Eve and the Battle
Scene 1: The Christmas Party
The story begins in the grand home of the Stahlbaum family, where guests gather for a festive Christmas Eve celebration. Clara and her brother Fritz admire the decorations, gifts, and lively dancing. Their mysterious godfather, Drosselmeyer, arrives with magical toys, including a Nutcracker doll for Clara. Fritz, out of jealousy, breaks the Nutcracker, but Drosselmeyer repairs it.

Scene 2: The Transformation and Battle
At midnight, Clara returns to check on her Nutcracker and falls asleep by the Christmas tree. The room transforms as the tree grows to an enormous size, and an army of mice, led by the Mouse King, appears. The Nutcracker comes to life and leads a battle against the Mouse King and his soldiers. With Clara’s help, the Nutcracker wins the battle and turns into a handsome prince, inviting Clara on a magical journey.

Act II: The Land of Sweets
Scene 3: The Snow Forest
Clara and the Nutcracker Prince travel through a beautiful, snow-covered forest, where they are greeted by the graceful Snowflakes. The Snow Queen bids them farewell as they continue their journey.

Scene 4: The Land of Sweets and the Grand Celebration
They arrive at the Kingdom of Sweets, ruled by the Sugar Plum Fairy. The Nutcracker Prince tells the story of their battle, and in honor of their bravery, Clara is treated to a festival of dances from different cultures:

Spanish Dance (Chocolate) – Energetic and passionate.
Arabian Dance (Coffee) – Slow and mesmerizing.
Chinese Dance (Tea) – Light and playful.
Dance of the Reed Flutes – Soft and elegant.
The celebration continues with the Waltz of the Flowers, a dazzling ensemble performance.

The Grand Pas de Deux
The highlight of the evening is the duet between the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier, featuring the famous Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. This scene showcases intricate ballet technique and the magical sound of the celesta.

Scene 5: Clara Awakens
After the celebrations, Clara and the Prince say goodbye. Clara wakes up at home by the Christmas tree, holding her Nutcracker. She wonders if it was all a dream or if she truly experienced a magical adventure.

This traditional production of The Nutcracker captures the wonder and beauty of one of ballet’s most cherished classics.

People don't understand how hard the Nutcracker performance is, I've been in them multiple times and keeping up with everyone is hard work and motivation, it's not easy.

Tchaikovsky thinking that he failed this ballet brings me tears because I haven't heard anything better than this in my whole life. I guess all of the great artists in the literary, art, and music world have had the tendency to think they're a failure.

Thank you for posting this. My Autistic daughter is currently obsessed with the Nutcracker but I don't think she can handle a live performance yet.

Ok but can we just take a moment to appreciate all the minor characters in this? Like the dolls that Droselmyer had? Those guys killed it!

This is my very first time seeing the Nutcracker at 28 years old. My only regret is waiting so long! Truly an amazing story that has me believing in Christmas again.

I did ballet for 10 years and did 4 Nutcrackers (all Balanchine yet very memorable for me). Here is some commentary I have:
-The Russian dance was the best I have ever seen, like they were in time, the choreography went with the timing, everyone was clapping to the beat, it was really fun to watch them.
-I love the fact that Marie is played by a young adult and does the Sugarplum Fairy variation. Her expressions and acting were amazing!
-props to whoever played Drosselmeier, dancing with a long cape is hard! Also loved his acting and expressions. His movements were sharp and clean.

The kid who played Marie's brother / the Prince deserves more recognition. He was phenomenal.

My Mum loved The Nutcracker and this is our first Christmas without her. I heard the prelude in another program, and my eyes welled up with tears. I hope that she is able to watch a performance of The Nutcracker from up in Heaven, together with our Dad. I try to focus on the fact that she is reunited with our Dad (because she never got over his death) and that they are both in Heaven now, because they were both good Christians. Anyone reading this, if your parents are still alive, please give them an extra hug and tell them that you love them. Years later, you will look back and be very glad that you did this.

if the dancers aren’t my favorite part, it’s definitely the music. it makes the whole performance so much more alive.
