Try The Original Fix(PLEASE TRY THIS FIRST):
Instructions for Restoring host file:
1. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot% \system32\drivers\etc
2.Press CTRL and drag host file to desktop to create a copy.
3.Open the host file with notepad and and paste the correct operating system message stated below:
Paste the following:
For Windows XP or for Windows Server 2003
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.

4. File, Save and your done!
5. Have fun playing Minecraft and or Tekkit.

Works perfectly, stayed stuck with this error for 3 days, now works to join my friend's server. Thanks soooo much, you were a great help!

For the people Who are on win 8! You do the same thing he does and copy the win 7 text to put in "host" file. It worked for me!

for people who are haveing problem with premissions u take out the host and not copy it when its out u put what ever u put in there and put it back in the best way it worked for me the saveing bit not the conclusion

@Kevin Browning All i can suggest is that you open task manager using CTRL+ALT+DELETE, and possibly even try notepad rather than notepad++ for this method, good luck!

Hey guys, I love trying to help as many people as I can by making new videos but I'm stuck for ideas; I would love to do a DayZ Taviana series at one point. Unfortunately i do not have windows 8 however i may be able to use my sisters laptop at one point to create a video on it so keep an eye out the video should be coming soon!

save it on your desktop, remove the old hosts in the \etc folder and then pull the new file in your folder

I will be making a tutorial for windows 8 soon as i need to first obtain a PC with windows 8 first to record it on!

it worked
but had to replace the text from ythe file that i moved on my desktop because i couldn't save it in the folder from \etc
but it worked

I have a SIMILAR problem.... I tried using this video to fix it, but I guess the small difference isnt small enough for this video to work....
The difference is that instead of saying java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out, it says
java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused: no further information

Please help! I've tried SO MANY TUTORIALS!!!

if it says you cant save just drag it to the desktop and edit it then drag it back done :D
