I grew up at a Manhattan Project nuclear site. When I went to work there one day I was handed a memo that said I was to go to every in ~200 square miles looking for classified documents. Of course in the middle of 100 degree weather. The irony of this assignment was I didn’t have a TOP secret security clearance. My coworker did but we’re both sitting in the middle of the desert sweating our asses off SCANNING the documents to make sure there were no documents where they weren’t supposed to be. Btw, every place we looked was packed floor to ceiling with boxes of documents. It was one of the most ironic, awful assignments I’ve ever had but hey at least I was out of the office. 😂

The main reason for over classification is that there is almost 0 risk from overclassifying a document, but a much greater risk if you under classify.

And by risk I don't mean to the country or agency, I mean the risk of not getting promoted or possibly getting fired.

Phil is right. I had a nuclear grade secret clearance and most of the docs are shit that is on Wikipedia.

In order of importance it’s normally classified, secret then top secret, fyeo,loc sen etc are sub groups from the main 3 or have I got it wrong ?
