I was 11 years old when I walked into a music store in Lakewood (Washington) and "Somethings Cooking" was playing. I'd never heard anything like that and bought it on the spot (my friends were mostly listening to Elvis). Many years later, I had a friend who went to the Institute and has great stories about Howard and Tommy side-by-side in class and how different they were.

I first paid attention to Howard with his work in bringing GIT to an elite level

I saw him at the Jazz Workshop in Boston. He was playing with a friend of mine (Phil Porter) on keyboard and Allen Dawson on drums. I played in High School with Phil and Allen Dawson was one of the best drummers in the country. I had a front row table with my wife. It was one great night back in the late 70's

I had the privilege of seeing HR live more times than I can remember. He used to play with super-duper keyboardist, Barney McClure. Barney would drop out occasionally and HR would improvise unique chord solos as only he could. Music is its own reward and if there is a language of heaven it must include

Howard Roberts, Lenny Breau, Johnny Smith, Ted Greene all dead, but not forgotten.

In 1964 I heard his recording of Dirty Old Bossa Nova on his H.R. is a Dirty Guitar Player album. I was in college, purchased it, and played the album until it was worn out. I have 4 of the tunes from that album on my Spotify account. Watermelon Man, Deep Fry, and Satin Doll are listened to often.

I met his son some years ago in Nashville at a NAMM show. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree - Roberts obviously schooled him.

Pete Jolly always looks so relaxed when he plays. It just flows out of his fingers. What an amazing group of single one.

I read his columns for years. I remember he had one on sonic shapes that still influences me. This is the first time I'm hearing him play!

It was March 1989 at GIT Orientation. Never got tired of his arrangement of this spectacularly beautiful LeRoy Anderson song!
