My earliest childhood memory was watching Italia 90 with my Dad and Mam, my mother passed earlier this year and this song reminds me of simpler and warmer times. She loved our country and was a very proud Irish woman

So glad I was just about old enough to appreciate how good we were in the late 80's/early 90's

To this day, I believe:
1) there is a parallel universe where fortunes were so slightly different and Ireland beat England in the 1990 WC Final.
2) in all parallel universes, Put 'Em Under Pressure is the greatest hype up soccer tune ever.

*1) we could have beaten Italy (very close game on the night), scrapped it out with Argentina and beaten England in the final on penalties. It would have been the beginning of a glorious new era for humankind.
*2) guitar riff, classic big Jack quotes, an ole ole, we're all part of Jackie's army, UILLEANN PIPES SOLO!!! It does not get any better!

Did any national team ever have a more kick ass world Cup song? Unlikely

Revisiting this song years later I note two things. Whilst I still enjoy the song I found that Ireland never still proved to be the best football team, no problem we've done great in rugby and elsewhere, but the uilleann pipes solo in this track was amazing. The trad music musicians then and still mostly play single scale solos with little invention outside of the standard norm of the traditional style but this track has an exceptional solo performance that is exciting and spirited while still being authentic in Celtic tradition. I invite you all here to listen again and pay careful attention to the pipe player on this track and how the solo was built. Almost guitar or keyboard like despite being a more limited wind instrument. An incredible player was behind the mouth piece on this track

Jack Charlton is the 2nd best (1st in my opinion) Brit in Ireland after St Patrick. We should have a national Charlton day

I wouldn’t think Jack would be proud of the situation the Ireland football team are in rn
