BYU Honor Code Protest Song

The @brighamyounguniversity honor code "clarification letter" of March 4, 2020 was a trigger for me because it brought back memories of things I have been trying to forget.

👉 In 2010, I was expelled from BYU Idaho because I was gay.

My bishop specifically told me that if my romantic behavior had "been with a girl"
there wouldn't be a problem. [I"ll share more info on my story in a future post.]

But even before I kissed a boy, I was living in fear. As a flamboyant creative theatre kid, I was continually being watched for any sign that I might violate the honor code.

It's not a pleasant experience to feel hunted.

❗Now, a little over a decade later, I say SHAME ON BYU for creating a fear-filled culture for so many vulnerable young people.

🎵 This song, "Gays Just Can't Hold Hands" is a protest song that I worked on with Claudine Foudray Gallacher who provided the lyrics.

This song is about validating the pain of students who were given a reason to believe BYU was becoming a safe place; then a few weeks later they were officially told they better go back in hiding.

🏳️‍🌈 BYU students, we want you to know that we see you and we hear you and we love you exactly as you are. This song is our gift to you to use in any way you want.

❣️ If you are not a BYU student, we ask you to share this song to inform the world of what BYU students are experiencing. Everyone needs to know that in 2021, LGBTQ students at BYU still can't hold hands.
