From what I've read, Altman has invested his fortune in fusion reactors and life extension. What stronger evidence could there be that he is an altruist of the long-termer variety? However, he is hardly ego-less. I believe that he very much wants to go down in history as the founder and leader of the organization that brought artificial general intelligence (perhaps super-intelligence) to humankind. A parsimonious hypothesis is that he has succumbed to ends-justify-the-means reasoning.
