As i know Spanish and Portuguese, i totally would say Spain to the lady who speaks Catalan, even though í don't speak Catalan the sound is similar to other Latin languages, well Italian was easy for obvious reasons

As a native Malay speaker, she is very fluent for a non-native speaker in Malaysia and her R is not as typical as many Chinese Malaysians who can’t roll their Rs very well. Her R sounds like she could be from the northern part of Malaysia when r is pronounced as “gh”. And she is quite humble because pointing out her weakness is just a humble way to showcase herself instead of being too prideful with their own native languages and then put people down with that.

asking then to count from one to five was a good strategy but she unfortunately didn't remember the answer. If she does, she would realize the other two countries had similarities to Malaysia. Malay, Indonesian, Tagalog language are part of Austronesia Language Group.

Meanwhile, this was the first time I heard Chinese Malaysian spoke Malay. Despite on how good she spoke Malay, I could sense that she didn't used it in her daily life.

Hazeline spoke Malay well. Sure she has a very noticeable Chinese accent, but as long as the fluency is good then it’s already good. Syabas Hazeline!

I'm italian. When the catalan girl spoke I was thinking:"What is this romance language that is not spanish, french, portuguese or, obviously, italian?" ❤

She does not know Asian languages 😳. Malaysian 🇲🇾 is similar to Indonesia 🇮🇩 .

Tagalog 🇵🇭 has some cognates of both languages and Spanish. Kumusta should have been the big giveaway 🙄. Spanish cognate.

English is an official language in Malaysia 🇲🇾, Singapore 🇸🇬 and The Philippines 🇵🇭. I traveled to the latter 2 nations.

We Brazilians can understand Catalan very well. I think it's even easier to understand than Portuguese from other countries and Spanish. For many of us, it sounds just like they are speaking Portuguese

I’m sure Jessica is a nice girl, and guessing languages is really hard if you’re not exposed to them. What I’m going to say next is not meant to slight her, but I’m just wondering why she kept on saying “North Africa” when it’s not even a country? 🤔

Also, asking them to count from one to five is a good strategy but it’s going to be useless if you don’t even pay attention. Numbers in Austronesian languages are often similar, so while she wasn’t able to guess Malay, when it was time for the Indonesian and Tagalog speakers that came after that, she should’ve been able to hear the similarities when it comes to numbers in those languages and by process of comparison she should’ve been able to conclude that they come from the same region.

Oh well, we can’t really imagine being in her shoes, so all things considered we should really applaud her for giving her best 👏

"whatever they speak in north africa"
that would be mostly arabic and sounds nothing like that. Besides that many places in the area also speak french, which also sounds nothing like that.
